Letter to the Clan Societies

S.C.O.T.  NEWS!

Houston Kiltmakers (www.kiltmakers.com) donated tartan banners for each of the Scottish Clans of Texas to be placed in a permanent display at Sam Houston Memorial Museum in honor of Tartan Day 2007!!

Helen Widener, of Clan Mackay, is working on a Scottish recipes book. The idea behind the book is that a clan will be featured, with a link to the clan's website and (if permission is given) a plaid from the society -- then recipes that have been contributed by clan members will follow, along with stories about where the recipe came from and/or about the person that made them. Helen will take the recipes and compare them to some "old" Scottish recipes -- if there is an older version, she will print them both (the "old" recipe and the "modern" recipe). So... submit away! This book is intended to be offered to the clan societies at wholesale prices for resale as a fundraising item, and will also be offered as a retail purchase for those of you interested in obtaining a copy for your own collections.
If you would like to submit recipes, or have any other questions about the project, contact Helen at hwidener@msn. com.

Famous Texans: David L. Wilson - fought & died at the Alamo in 1836

Family Stories: The first Wilson in Texas, at least from my direct line was David L. Wilson who was married to Ophelia. The year he entered Texas is unfounded but his death is clear. He fought and died at the Alamo in 1836. He was probably one of the volunteers who accompanied Capt. Philip Dimmitt to Bexar and the Alamo in the early months of 1836. He remained at the Alamo after Dimmitt left on the first day of the siege. David Wilson died in the battle of the Alamo on March 6, 1836.  (submitted by Scott Bruno)

Check it out for extensive details.

First arrived in Texas:  1820-30

The International Association of Clan MacInnes is the only known organized body in the world representing the MacInnes'.  We were granted Arms by the Lyon Court in 2004 and now have a formal banner flying over the hereditary castle, Kinlochaline, in Morvern although it is owned by others.

The first known McInnis family (their spelling) in Texas apparently crossed over from Louisiana in the 1820-30s and settled in the piney woods north of Beaumont.  Many are buried in the Baptist Church Cemetery in Fred, TX.  It is presumed thay came originally from either Skye, Mull or Morvern and landed in the Cape Fear area of North Carolina.

We became active in Texas in 1988 at the Arlington Games and have been at the TSF&HG each year since.  The Association was initially founded in 1970 at the Grandfather Mtn. Games in North Carolina.

First arrived in Texas: The Thom(p)son’s came to Texas in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. There were four defenders at the Alamo with derivatives of the Scottish name Mactavish. Jesse G Thompson, B. Archer M. Thomas, John W. Thomson and Henry Thomas. That is not to say that all are from MacTavish stock, but in all likelihood, most are, since these are anglicized versions of MacTavish (Son of Tamhais).

Letter to the Scottish Clans...

The Texas Scottish Heritage Society is a newly formed organization dedicated to research and preservation of the history of Scots in Texas.  Within the society, we have formed a special group, "Scottish Clans of Texas".  Membership in S.C.O.T. is as simple as providing basic information about your clan history and activity in Texas.  There are no fees or costs involved.  The form is attached or available on the web.

We are asking each clan to provide a brief history.  This can be a very short summary to start with - we will publish whatever you send and will allow updates as you provide them.  We are especially interested in members of your clan that first arrived in Texas, as well as names, time frame, circumstances, etc.  Also, any well known Texans who are "clansmen".  (ie: Sam Houston - MacDonald).   Help us collect and preserve this important part of Texas history.

As a member, your clan will be authorized to display the S.C.O.T. logo with your Clan name.  Your historical information will be available through our website (www.TxScot.com) and we will also provide a link to your "Texas" or Regional newsletter as well as your national organization on our S.C.O.T. website.  Your clan will be among the first to learn of historical research  and invited to participate in area projects and events.

Please take a moment to submit your form and provide basic info.

If you would like your Scottish Clan to become a member and have a link added to our website,

please fill in  our S.C.O.T. form.
