COME, BE A PART OF HISTORY
The annual "Battle Of The Neches" Memorial Ceremony
(the second day battle sight July 16, 1839)

The AICS have purchased 70 acres of the land* that originally belonged to the Cherokee people.          .
*On this LAND, the Texas Cherokee and 13 associated Indian tribal bands,
under the leadership of Chief John ‘Duwa'li' Bowles, Chief Big Mush and
six other tribal chiefs, were slain July 16, 1839.  This massacre by the
Republic of Texas Militia, under the direction of President Mirabeau
Lamar, took the lives of many innocent men, women and children along
with the burning of a Delaware village. The associated Indian tribal
bands were: Cherokee, Shawnee, Delaware, Kickapoo, Quapaw, Choctaw,
Biloxi, Ioni, Alabama, Coushatta, Caddo of the Neches, Tahocullake,
Mataquo and possibly other groups.
*Many now and forever consider this LAND sacred ground. The spirits of
the men, women and children slain here can still be felt.  Their BLOOD
and TEARS forever stain THE LAND.
ACIS has assumed the personal responsibility of preserving and
maintaining this sacred ground.  Helping to preserve it as a Memorial
and Sanctuary for ALL who wish to HONOR and RESPECT the ancient culture
of traditions, customs and beliefs of ALL AMERICAN INDIAN PEOPLE.

" Their voices shall never be silent, we walk with the ancestral spirits"

Cherokee, Shawnee, Delaware, Kickapoo, Quapaw, Choctaw, Biloxi, Loni. Alabama, Colushatta, Caddo , Tahocullake, Mataquo.....

These are the names that will be engraved on the stones leading up to the monument and the circle

.

MEMBERSHIP

The American Indian Cultural Society is a registered 501(c)3 Public Foundation.  We believe in equality, membership is open to ALL people with like mind interest who want to help the organization meet its purpose and goals.

Our purpose is to preserve, develop and maintain American Indian land.  We will endeavor to preserve the American Indian languages, art, music, customs and culture.  We will strive to teach, adults and children, that "man's inhumanity to man" should not have taken place in the past and should never happen again.

Come join us - we will work as a team - we will realize the dream together.  Yes! We will work, but we will also have fun, come be a part of us and watch us grow.  Be a part of the growth of unity and pride.

The LAND is open to the general public to enjoy, but in doing so please treat it with respect.  This is a sacred place to us not unlike cemeteries.  Any individuals or organizations that wish to camp or hold functions on this land - please contact the American Indian Cultural Society to make prior arrangements.  A donation will be asked to defray cost and maintenance.  Thank you for your understanding and kindness to this sacred place.

Current projects

As of December 2004 we have paid the deed for the Land in full.  We now can focus our major energy on some of the other projects.

We have been working with the Cherokee Nation and DIC in Dallas delivering donations.  We have provided food, clothing, household, health care and hygiene products, school supplies and much more.

We are at the heart of our school supply drive.  We need donations of school supplies and school clothes, especially shoes, socks, and underclothes for the children.  If you cannot get the donation to us before school starts, do not worry; they will be delivered with the next load.  We have made 4 trips to The Nation and 7 trips to DIC in the past 10 months.  Anything you can do to help is better than nothing.  Don't forget the Christmas toy drive that will be delivered in December.  We accept items for teens and adults as well for the Christmas drive.  Big people need hugs sometimes too.

For donation information please contact Jeena Douglas @ 972-743-9752.  If you give money, please specify which drive you want it to go toward and it shall be done.

FUTURE PLANS PROPOSAL
  • Maintain and preserve the Land.
  • Install housing and hire a caretaker
  • Create a Ceremonial/Meditation Garden
  • Build a Trading Post that will be added on to
  • Rebuild the destroyed Delaware Village
  • Construct a Cherokee Village
  • Add onto the Trading Post a food and clothing pantry, an American Indian Museum, a learning center, wellness center, and a large indoor facility for gatherings/gym for children
The Ceremonial and Mediation Garden will be installed around the monument area.  It will consist of all natural boulders and rocks.  The boulders and rocks will swerve a double purpose, to allow people to sit and rest while they are visiting, and to protect the monument area from the individuals who want to drive around the monument and desecrate the area.  It will consist of plant smart landscaping of plants native to the area in keeping with our desire for everything to look and remain natural.

We have a special cared stone marker that was donated by Brick and Stone Graphics located in Dallas.  The stone in honor of Chief Chad Smith and the Cherokee Nation is on display by the monument during the ceremony only.  We will have the stone placed in its permanent place when we have a caretaker to protect these items.

We have 13 pine trees donated from the Cherokee Nation planted privately here in Texas until they are large enough to be moved to the land.  These trees have gone through a blessing ceremony.  They will be planted on the east side of the monument: in memory of the 13 confederated tribes.

Anyone wishing to donate appropriate boulders or rocks for the purpose of this project needs to contact the American Indian Cultural Society.
